Our guide to Villa Balbiano on Lake Como: its gardens, salons and lake terrace, how a wedding day flows there, and how to photograph it, from our own workshops at the villa.

Villa Balbiano seen from the water, Lake Como

Villa Balbiano is a private lakeside villa in Ossuccio on Lake Como, Italy, known for its formal gardens, frescoed baroque salons and a lawn that runs down to the water. For couples it is one of the most cinematic places to marry on the lake. For wedding photographers, videographers and planners it offers something rarer still: grand interiors, a garden avenue, a ceremony terrace and the lake itself, all within one estate, so a whole wedding story can unfold without leaving the gates.

This is our guide to Villa Balbiano, written from the wedding workshops we have held there. It covers the spaces and how they photograph, how a wedding day flows from the bridal suite to the lake terrace, and practical notes for planners and couples. It is our own guide, not the venue’s site: for weddings and private bookings at the villa, contact its owners directly (details at the end).

Where is Villa Balbiano?

The villa sits on the shore of Lake Como at Ossuccio, with the water in front and the mountains rising behind it. That setting is what defines it in photographs: from the lawn you look out over the lake, and from the water the villa appears framed by cypresses, clipped hedges and its formal garden.

Most travellers reach Lake Como through Milan and continue to the lake by road. For our workshops, participants arrange their own travel and accommodation, and many make a few days of it, as the lake rewards an extra morning or evening with a camera.

What makes Villa Balbiano special for weddings

Many Lake Como venues have one signature view. Villa Balbiano has several distinct settings, each with its own mood, and that variety is why we keep returning.

The garden avenue and the hedges

A long garden avenue with a water channel leads from the villa through clipped hedges and cypresses. It gives strong lines and depth for couple portraits, and a natural runway for walking shots and film. In spring the gardens change completely: at our April 2025 workshop the avenue was lined with Judas trees in full pink blossom.

The frescoed salons

Inside, the villa is all frescoed ceilings, tapestries, green velvet chairs and sofas, marble busts and a grand staircase. These rooms carry the getting-ready story beautifully: the bride and bridesmaids in the suites, the groom and his friends on a velvet sofa, details such as shoes and veils laid against rich fabric. They also give an indoor alternative to the gardens that never looks like a compromise.

The lake terrace and lawn

The lakeside lawn and terrace, with their stone obelisks, are where we set our ceremonies. Chairs face the water, floral pillars or an arch frame the couple, and with a little patience a wooden boat drifts past behind the vows. For dinner, the lawn and the garden avenue both hold a long, candlelit table.

The pool, the jetty and the water

The poolside is our favourite place for a relaxed aperitivo with guests: spritz, laughter and colour, a complete change of pace from the formal rooms. A wooden jetty reaches out into the lake for quieter portraits, and a classic Riva-style boat in front of the villa gives the shot most couples picture when they think of Lake Como.

A Villa Balbiano wedding day, hour by hour

At our workshops we recreate a complete wedding day at the villa, and the timings below are the ones we will follow on 6 May 2027. They make a useful template for anyone planning or photographing a real wedding there, because they move through the spaces in a natural order and end as the light softens.

  • 1:30–2:00 PM: the bride getting ready in the villa suites
  • 2:00–2:30 PM: the groom getting ready
  • 2:30–3:00 PM: stationery and details flat lay, ceremony set-up on the terrace
  • 3:30–4:00 PM: first look, guest portraits and drone
  • 4:00–4:45 PM: couple portraits with villa views
  • 5:00–5:45 PM: ceremony with guests by the lake
  • 5:45–6:15 PM: group portraits around the ceremony set-up
  • 6:30–7:15 PM: dinner reception styling
  • 7:20–7:45 PM: grand finale, with champagne and cake

The order matters. Interiors first, while the gardens are being dressed; the first look before guests fill the terrace; portraits in the gardens before the ceremony; then the reception and finale as the day turns golden.

Photographing Villa Balbiano: tips from our workshops

Let the interiors set the tone

The salons are rich in colour and pattern, so restraint pays off. Frame the bride against a single fresco or tapestry rather than the whole room, and let the window light do the work. Details such as shoes, veils and stationery look their best on the velvet and marble the villa already offers, with no props needed.

Use the avenue for depth and movement

The garden avenue is made for long lenses and walking shots. Place the couple at the far end and let the hedges and water channel lead the eye; for film, a slow walk towards the camera along the avenue is one of the simplest and most cinematic sequences at the villa.

Show the villa, not just the view

It is tempting to point every frame at the lake. The images that clients remember also show where they were: the façade behind the couple on the lawn, the gates, the cypresses.

Take it from the air

The most recognisable image of Villa Balbiano is the estate from above: the villa, its garden avenue and the shore of the lake in a single frame. A drone flight, with the villa’s permission and within local rules, gives you that view far more easily than a boat. Give it its own time slot in soft light, rather than squeezing it between other moments.

Make room for the guests

A villa wedding is also a party. The poolside aperitivo and the moments around the cake table give candid, joyful frames that balance the editorial portraits, and they are often the images couples share most.

Planning a wedding at Villa Balbiano: notes for planners and couples

The villa takes very different styles. In April 2025 we dressed it in white flowers with bridesmaids in black; in April 2026, terracotta linen and orange and peach florals. Both felt entirely at home, so build the design around the couple rather than a fixed idea of the villa.

Plan the flow between spaces. The strength of Villa Balbiano is moving guests from one setting to the next: ceremony by the lake, aperitivo by the pool, dinner on the lawn or the avenue. Each move is a small reveal, and each needs its own set-up time in the schedule.

Keep the salons in mind as a weather plan. Lake weather can change quickly. The interiors are beautiful enough to hold part of the day if needed, which makes contingency planning far less stressful.

Book the venue with its owners, and the planning with a team who knows it. Weddings at the villa are booked directly with Villa Balbiano; you can reach its owners through the villa’s official Instagram. Our Villa Balbiano workshop in 2027

Our next workshop at Villa Balbiano is on 5–6 May 2027, for wedding photographers, videographers and planners. On 6 May we recreate a full wedding day at the villa: a styled ceremony with floral installations, reception tablescapes, bride, groom and guests dressed by luxury designers, and one couple with wedding guests. On 5 May an optional afternoon takes us to the Gardens of Como and out on a private boat with two more styled couples, in a romantic, elopement-inspired story.

Participants work in small rotating groups of 4–5 alongside our team, including Anna and Diana (Still Miracle). Planners take part as professionals, seeing a luxury Lake Como wedding come together and leaving with imagery of their work and new connections with photographers and videographers. The villa day starts at €3,350 and the two-day package at €3,750, at early-bird prices until 30 November 2026. Everything is on the Villa Balbiano 2027 workshop page.

To see what the villa looks like through our cameras, browse the results of our April 2026 workshop and our April 2025 workshop. And for a participant’s view, read how the Sydney studio VOGA Weddings photographed our September 2026 edition, the villa day and the boat and gardens, in their success story.
